We forgot to take our camera along, so this picture was taken with my cell phone -- not exactly top-quality, but at least better than nothing. This is an area called Detroit Lakes (about 75 miles from home)-- quite a variety of beautiful rivers and lakes all connected together. Looking at this glassy-calm, serenly-quiet waterway, you would never guess how different the river looks in other spots. We took a walk along one stretch of wild and wooly white water, and reminisced about the time we dumped our canoe and nearly drowned (on a different river, in the state of Washington), in February of 1998. You never forget an experience like that, and you hope to never experience it again!
