Finally, we decided it was time to get up and get busy with our usual routine of what happens at our house when the parade is over -- time to put away all the Christmas trimmings for another year. However, since today was the last day of our holidays, we just couldn't let it go to "waste"...like, you know, spend the whole day working!
By lunch time, what had started out as a rainy day (our usual winter weather), began to look almost salvagable...perhaps worth more than just hanging around the house doing Christmas tear-down. So, we quickly took off to go exploring (thankful for our 4-wheel drive Explorer), back to our "ol' stompin' grounds" of southwestern Washington.
Here's a few of the sights we enjoyed (click on pics to enlarge) :

No, these photos weren't taken from some far-off vacation spot -- it's all within an hour's drive of where we lived in Washington, before moving just across the state border into Oregon. Today's drive was a beautiful way to spend our afternoon, and, even though it went back to raining on our "parade", it certainly was not a mundane Monday!

Sounds like a better way to start the new year!
Nice, Mom. Where were those photos taken? Amboy? Glad you had a nice day. Also glad it never rained like that when we were spending the night down at the parade route!
Photos were taken along the rough and twisty forest trail (sometimes with rather steep drop-offs), that wound its way up through the hills (22 miles) from the Washougal River (near the Skamania Hatchery) to Moulton Falls and Lucia Falls (last 3 pics), near Yacolt.
Wow, it looks like Canada.....I was at the Rose Bowl Parade once, in 1973 I think......Memories
My typical January 1st after waking and enjoying the new beginning is also to take down the Christmas decorations. The Christmas tree is very sad to take down because I usually spend the evenings with only the tree lights on listening to the quiet calm and maybe the Bill Gaither Christmas video in soothing the tired body and mind before going to bed.Your trek into the woods looked wonderful thanks for taking us with you.
I too went hiking on New Year's Day! My friend, Janie, who was diagnosed with diffuse lymphoma a couple of months ago, asked me to join her. We hiked over 5 miles of mountain slopes..some of which were icy and half of which was by moonlight. A new experience & oh so invigorating for us both. We chatted the whole way and caught up on each other's lives and thoughts. Seeing your great photos makes me wish I had taken my camera, though.
